Emotional wellness for carers
Giving a loved one the best of you, also means looking after yourself too!
Why is taking care of your mental, physical and emotional health so important?
It is a great feeling being able to provide the best care for a loved one, but it also has its own challenges. Being a carer does not follow the normal 9-5 hours and can really push you to your physical and mental limits on a daily basis.
Like any of us who care for another person, we will always put the other person and their needs first. All of this can take its toll and there runs a real risk of developing your own health challenges such as fatigue, forgetfulness and stress and even anxiety.
Managing your own emotional wellness and making sure self care is set as a priority for yourself, can help you stay healthy and well. Taking care of your own health and helping the person(s) you are for make it a propriety for them too, can be a great way to connect and feel grounded in the situation you may be in and keep you best equipped to give the support you do.
Carers are in it for the long haul, it can be easy to let your own needs fall off the radar which can accumulate into bad habits which can strain mental and physical health. It is important to make yourself a priority and to be realistic about what you can do, to ask for help when you need it, to access a support network to help guide you through - you are not alone, make sure that you access support from places that are available to you (links at the bottom of this feed).
It might seem obvious about supporting your own mental health involves self care and accessing support networks. However, in order to achieve positive health and wellbeing it is important that we nourish our bodies in the right way. This means eating properly and staying in good physical health, eating plenty of vegetables, fruit, lean meats and good fats is so important to our wellbeing.
